Yesterday, my beautiful wife made a super delicious apple crisp. We had talked last summer about what a neat ice cream flavor "apple crisp" would make so we had this in mind as she made it.
I set aside a decent size portion and froze it over night, to mix into the ice cream as it was nearly done.
I made the "Ben & Jerry's French Vanilla" I made the other day again, since it was so successful. It came out just as good as before, and after mixing in the apple crisp every one who tasted it raved! Homemade "Apple Crisp" ice cream is one recipe I will make again for sure.
Success!
Enjoy!

Chocolate Chocolate-Raspberry-Chip Ice Cream
Fresh off the success of my chocolate chip ice cream, today I set out to make a more interesting flavor, using the Chocolate-Raspberry bar I got for Christmas.
That along with some Dutch-process cocoa would make up my "Chocolate Chocolate-Raspberry-Chip Ice Cream" flavor. I mixed everything up and got the machine going again. This time, things did not go as smoothly as I had hoped. The chocolate mixture did not set-up as nicely as the vanilla did the day before. The result was much soupier that I wanted. After around 40 minutes I turned off the machine, mixed in the chocolate-raspberry chips and put it in the freezer.
Later on the mix did freeze up and tasted delicious, but it wasn't quite as "ice-creamy" as I wanted.
Thinking things through, I think maybe things were not as cold as they should have been. So next time I will make sure everything is super cold.
Enjoy!

Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream & Dessert Book
This is another gift I got for Christmas - Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream & Dessert Book -
and not only is it filled with delicious sounding recipes, it is an interesting and fun read and is full of good "ice cream wisdom". It has 3 different "bases" to use as a starting point for all the different recipes.
Today I am simplifying and am making their "French Vanilla" - then I will mix in some chocolate chips near the end. I used the recipe for "Sweet Cream Base 1", making sure everything was good and cold.
This time the ice cream came out great! Incredibly creamy and rich with an amazing consistency. Quite possibly the best ice cream I have ever had!
Enjoy!

French vanilla bean ice cream
mmmm - along with the ice cream maker, I got two whole vanilla beans for Christmas
also a Ghirardelli chocolate bar
and an amazing chocolate raspberry bar
So ... following the recipe in the booklet that came with the ice cream maker, I set out to make the Vanilla Bean ice cream, cooking the cream and milk and vanilla bean slowly on the stove.
After chilling a short while, I put the mix in the maker, and which much anticipation I started up the machine. Unfortunately, I guess I didn't let things chill enough, since the ice cream never set up, even after running for 30 or 35 minutes in the machine. I put the mix in the freezer and revisited it several hours later, only to find it a solid block of vanilla custard!
Oh well, better luck next time hopefully!
Enjoy!

I got an ice cream maker for Christmas
My amazing wife got me this ice cream maker for Christmas. Last summer we dreamed a lot of our own flavors - like "apple crisp" or "cantaloupe" or "peanut-butter ripple" - to name a few.
Check back to see how they turn out!
Enjoy!
